We have just posted the recordings from the 2023 WACC conference. All are fully captioned and should be accessible to you with the exception of the Cidilabs Presentation, which is available but not yet captioned. All recordings are organized alphabetically within their track – Keynote Addresses, Accessibility, Equity, Flex Mode, Open Educational Resources, Other, Pedagogy/Andragogy, and Technology.
The recordings can be found here, or simply navigate to WACC Recordings –> 2023 Conference Recordings from the home page.
Registered WACC 2023 attendees, please find your WACC 2023 schedule, with details and associated Zoom links, on your live sched.com application here, https://wacc2023.sched.com
The schedule for WACC is linked below. There may be a bit of juggling or adjusting before the conference, but this should be pretty close to a final version.
We have a great conference planned, including session tracks on technology, equity, pedagogy/andragogy, and everyone’s favorite track – “other”. (Actually, the “other” tracks look pretty cool. I might meet you in one of them).
In addition to the fabulous sessions, we have two great keynote speakers, a Canvas Roadmap session, where Instructure gives you a sneak peek of what you can expect from Canvas in the future.
Finally, don’t forget the social aspect. Now that we are all let out of our houses, this is chance to reconnect with old friends, make some new friends, buttonhole that super presenter you were so excited by, and network with your peers from the CTC system and beyond. In addition to the breakfast, lunch, and extended breaks, we’ve got a social hour planned for Thursday after the conference. Look for updates on entertainment and noshing opportunities in the near future.
We’ll send updates out, but also add information on our FAQ page, such as the best swag ever (at least it better be – I browbeat a committee to choose them).
Question: Where can I find a list of this year’s keynote speakers, general sessions, presentations, and their descriptions?
Until the conference app, Sched, is populated, please check out our WACC 2023 agenda docfor a general list of session times and presentation titles.
When the WACC 2023 Sched site becomes available, registered participants will be able to find a full list of session dates, times, titles, descriptions, locations, Zoom links and more. We recommend downloading the Sched mobile app to your phone before the conference.

Raising an Eyebrow at Grades: Ungrading for Equity, Inclusion, and Success
“Ungrading” is a provocative concept that encompasses a wide spectrum of assessment and classroom policy design decisions. As Jesse Stommel put it, “‘Ungrading’ means raising an eyebrow at grades as a systemic practice, distinct from simply ‘not grading.’” Join Caleb to explore how grading policies relate to student equity, inclusion, and success, and to unpack some ungrading theories, practices, and techniques. Caleb will also discuss how Canvas can support ungrading and share a bibliography of additional resources to help you dive more deeply into this emerging topic.

As you know, the situation in our area about the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to evolve and change. The host college for the upcoming WA Canvas Conference, Tacoma Community College, has been monitoring the situation closely, and follows Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department’s guidelines for schools and colleges. As of March 6th, the Health Department does not recommend schools to close or cancel activities. Currently, no schools in Pierce County have confirmed cases of COVID-19. Up north, Public Health – Seattle and King County have released guidelines to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
TCC is following the recommendations of Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, and as of today, the Health Department is not recommending canceling classes or events or closing the college.
Upon taking these considerations and the fact that the Canvas Conference brings in hundreds of people from around the state, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the event. We know this poses an inconvenience, and we sincerely apologize for this. We simply wish to take precautionary health measures.
We are currently working with Eventbrite to fully refund you, and will issue your refund as soon as possible. Please work directly with your hotels for cancellations.
We appreciate all what you do for our student success. We look forward to seeing you at next year’s WA Canvas Conference.
Questions about hotels, campus parking, wifi, and other topics?

Flexible Learning EXperiences (FLEX) Project
At Renton Technical College (RTC), FLEX is an acronym for Flexible Learning Experiences. FLEX courses are designed with an active learning instructional model and are supported by familiar technologies such as Canvas and Zoom. The FLEX modality empowers students to move toward success no matter what life events come their way and it promotes flexibility in learning on multiple levels leading students toward a more personalized learning experience. Join Yun to learn more about RTC’s student choice modality that allows students to decide on any given day whether to attend class in-person, virtually, or asynchronously – with little or no difference in their learning.

Game Over: Why your attempts to gamify your course don’t work (and how to fix it)
How can you, as an educator, consistently balance an intellectually rigorous course that produces exceptional learning, promotes equity in your classroom, and engages students? Gamification could be the answer, but attempts to gamify learning frequently end in poor, inequitable returns, or even outright failure. Why? Game designer Jeremy Winn breaks down the reasons why an incomplete understanding of the principles of gamification results in hours of wasted effort and why successful gamification is simpler than you think. Jeremy will walk you through the creation of your very own gamified assessment. Bring a learning goal to work with!
