The WACC 2024 Call for Proposals is open!

You’re invited to submit a proposal to present at Washington’s Annual Canvas Conference!

In-person at Tacoma Community College and virtually in Zoom
Wednesday and Thursday, March 27^th – 28^th, 2024

The WACC conference is back and better than ever this year and our Call for Proposals is live and accepting applications. This year’s conference theme is EMPOWER! and we’re excited to learn about how you are empowering yourself, your students, and your fellow instructors and staff. Although we are allowing virtual presenting, we strongly encourage presenting in person due to feedback from last year’s attendees. Please submit your proposal by December 15^th to guarantee priority preference and selection.

We’re open to receiving proposals on ALL types of teaching, learning, and technology topics, especially topics that incorporate equity-minded and re-imagined practices. Whether your presentation is designed for newbies, veterans, instructors, staff, tech wizards, people who write their passwords on post-it notes affixed to their monitor, or anyone in between – we’re interested and eager to consider your submission. Some potential topic areas to consider are:

All things Canvas from newbie hints to expert hacks to best practices to advanced features such as analytics and outcomes to telling us why you love New Quizzes
Anything advancing equity and accessibility
Open Educational Resources (OER)
Great pedagogy/andragogy methods, practices, and tips
Everybody’s favorite buzzword, AI
If all else fails, don’t forget “Other”

Sue will also share about the emerging regional group that has grown out of this work – Washington Open Publishing Project Collective, other student publications from across the college, and strategies for engaging your colleagues in student publishing projects. After a 3-year break, the WACC conference is back and this year we’ll be exploring FLEX/hyflex mode as an option for presenter and participant conference attendance. This means you get to choose how you attend! Join us in-person at Renton Technical College or virtually in Zoom for 1 ½ days of sharing uplifting teaching, learning, and technology topics that will ELEVATE! your practice and help you ELEVATE! student success.

The early bird in-person rate of only $135.00 covers both conference days and includes ELEVATING! keynote speakers and presentations, conference swag, a customizable scheduling app, and access to the captioned session recordings. You’ll also get yummy breakfasts, snacks, beverages, and lunches catered by RTC’s award-winning Culinary Arts program! After February 17^th, the in-person rate increases to $160.00.

Pressbooks is an eBook creation and discovery platform that hosts Open Educational Resources (OER). Thanks to the WA State Board of Community and Technical Colleges network subscription, faculty and staff at Lake Washington Institute of Technology started creating books this year! With seven books completed and many more in progress, faculty have chosen to use Pressbooks as a vehicle for student voice and as a tool for diversity and social justice work. Come learn more about Pressbooks and how LW Tech is using it to empower students.

Flexible Learning EXperiences (FLEX) Project

At Renton Technical College (RTC), FLEX is an acronym for Flexible Learning Experiences. FLEX courses are designed with an active learning instructional model and are supported by familiar technologies such as Canvas and Zoom. The FLEX modality empowers students to move toward success no matter what life events come their way and it promotes flexibility in learning on multiple levels leading students toward a more personalized learning experience. Join Yun to learn more about RTC’s student choice modality that allows students to decide on any given day whether to attend class in-person, virtually, or asynchronously – with little or no difference in their learning.

Join Stephanie to learn how her approach to Designing for Academic Integrity blends universal ideas of trust, honesty, and transparency into a grounded pedagogical framework and how her integrated approach draws students into the creation of the classroom culture as they learn about academic integrity while developing a personal honor code that is used to establish classroom norms.

How can you, as an educator, consistently balance an intellectually rigorous course that produces exceptional learning, promotes equity in your classroom, and engages students? Gamification could be the answer, but attempts to gamify learning frequently end in poor, inequitable returns, or even outright failure. Why? Game designer Jeremy Winn breaks down the reasons why an incomplete understanding of the principles of gamification results in hours of wasted effort and why successful gamification is simpler than you think. Jeremy will walk you through the creation of your very own gamified assessment. Bring a learning goal to work with!

“Ungrading” is a provocative concept that encompasses a wide spectrum of assessment and classroom policy design decisions. As Jesse Stommel put it, “‘Ungrading’ means raising an eyebrow at grades as a systemic practice, distinct from simply ‘not grading.’” Join Caleb to explore how grading policies relate to student equity, inclusion, and success, and to unpack some ungrading theories, practices, and techniques. Caleb will also discuss how Canvas can support ungrading and share a bibliography of additional resources to help you dive more deeply into this emerging topic.
